About Columbia Dance
Columbia Dance is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing high-quality dance education and performance opportunities in Southwest Washington. For over 35 years, we have fostered artistic excellence while creating a positive, inclusive, and nurturing environment for students of all backgrounds.
Each year, Columbia Dance serves over 200 students ages 3 through adult, giving approximately $50,000 in financial aid awards to ensure access regardless of financial circumstances. Our programs include a regional production of The Nutcracker, uniquely set in the Pacific Northwest, as well as our INCLUDE program, which provides dance opportunities for students with disabilities.
We are also committed to community outreach, including partnerships with local Title I schools, expanding access to arts education for students who may not otherwise be able to participate.

Position Overview
Columbia Dance is seeking a volunteer Compliance Officer to support strong governance practices and ensure adherence to nonprofit regulations, internal policies, and fiduciary responsibilities. This role helps safeguard the organization’s integrity, transparency, and long-term sustainability.
The Compliance Officer provides oversight and guidance but does not assume operational responsibilities, which remain with the Director and appropriate committees. This volunteer position is a voting member of the Columbia Dance Board of Trustees.
Core Responsibilities
- Ensure board adherence to governance standards and fiduciary duties
- Monitor compliance with applicable nonprofit laws and regulations (state and federal)
- Oversee implementation and annual review of key policies, including:
- Conflict of Interest
- Code of Ethics
- Gift Acceptance
- Support accurate and complete documentation of board actions and records
- Partner with the Treasurer to ensure appropriate financial controls and reporting practices are in place
- Partner with the Secretary to ensure proper documentation, recordkeeping, and governance processes
- Identify potential risks and recommend mitigation strategies
- Support board onboarding and governance best practices
Ideal Candidate
We are seeking individuals with:
- Experience or interest in governance, compliance, legal, finance, or risk management
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to interpret policies and ensure accountability
- Comfort working collaboratively with board leadership
Backgrounds in law, accounting, HR, or regulated industries are especially valuable.
Board Expectations
- Attend monthly board meetings and participate actively (minimum 75% attendance)
- Maintain independence and objectivity in oversight responsibilities
- Support a culture of transparency, accountability, and ethical conduct
- Annual personal financial contribution at a level meaningful to the individual
- Follow-through on commitments and board initiatives
Time Commitment
- Monthly board meetings (1–2 hours)
- Periodic compliance and policy review
- Participate in a committee (Finance, Donor Development, DEI, Facilities)
Estimated: 2–4 hours per month
