Washington School for the Blind announces that Mandy Lopez joined its board of directors for a two-year term. Mandy is a vice president and cash management officer for First Independent in Vancouver, Wash. She has been a volunteer for the School for the Blind for the past year and a half.
Nutter Corporation and MacKay & Sposito were local sponsors of the 18th annual Make a Difference Day on Oct. 24, 2009. Millions of Americans spent the day doing volunteer projects to improve their communities and help neighbors in need. The day is the largest community service effort in the country, rallying corporations, government leaders, charitable organizations and the public into action. In Vancouver, volunteers spent the day planting trees at Arnold Park and working at the Rose Village neighborhood, where they planted trees and repaired homes.
Clark College music professor Donald Appert has been honored with the ASCAPLUS Award for the fourth time. This award is presented by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. Appert also received this award in 2005, 2006 and 2008. He is currently in his 20th season as music director/conductor of the Clark College Orchestra.
Lacamas Community Credit Union (LCCU) presented a donation check for $3,000 to the Stevenson-Carson School District as part of the credit union’s 2009 Community Partnership Program. LCCU President and CEO Kathleen Romane presented the check to district representatives at a student assembly at Stevenson High School on Sept. 25, 2009. LCCU’s Community Partnerships are a group of area organizations that benefit from LCCU’s fundraising efforts. Throughout the year, the credit union raises funds through sale of entertainment books, skip payment programs and other efforts.
Prudential Northwest Properties announces that Bert Waugh Jr., president and broker owner, has been honored as the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year at his alma mater, Linfield College. This award recognizes his humanitarian work with homeless youth and his volunteer efforts worldwide. Waugh is the founder of Transitional Youth, a nonprofit organization that provides support to homeless youth in the greater Portland and Vancouver area. He also serves as chairman of the board of Medical Teams International, a global health organization that gives aid and empowers communities in conflict and poverty.
Vancouver Symphony Orchestra will host its 16 th annual Young Artists Competition in 2010. Local student instrumentalists will vie for a cash honorarium and a chance to perform with the VSO on April 17 and 18, 2010 at Skyview High School Concert Hall in Vancouver. The competition is open to all students 18 years or younger as of Jan. 1, 2010. Applications and information may be obtained by contacting the Vancouver Symphony Orchesta at 360.735.7278.

Mon., Nov. 2 - Chamber CARES Campaign begins

All of November. For the second year, the GVCC is raising money for its 501(c)3 nonprofit members. Donations are 100 percent tax deductible. Ways to donate: At the GVCC office, on our Web site, at chamber events, at Umpqua Bank stores and at the GVCC Holiday Breakfast on Dec. 4. Last year we raised $9,000. This year, we've already raised half that at our Annual Dinner. Our goal is $20,000.
